Fixed-Mobile Convergence

Fixed-mobile convergence promises to revolutionize the telecommunications industry; changes in technology are removing traditional boundaries. Convergence is more than technology — it's about markets aligning, bringing both new opportunities and increased competition. Motorola offers solutions that allow operators to capitalize on cable's quad play convergence of mobile, voice, data, and video services.

Cable operators can even go beyond quad play by enabling "Nxt-Play" services. Nxt-Play is more robust than voice, video, data, and wireless. Nxt-Play is about taking experiences mobile and making them seamless to the consumer. Nxt-Play means networks talk to networks and devices talk to devices. Motorola is delivering the foundation on which Nxt-Play applications will be delivered.

Motorola allows cable operators to offer subscribers an enhanced voice and home networking experience. The Motorola SVG2500 SURFboard® Digital Voice Wireless Gateway and Motorola's Residential Seamless Mobility Gateways (RSGs) are designed to enable the offloading of calls from Wi-Fi® to broadband networks.

RSG Enables Seamless Mobility Between Wireless and Cellular Networks

Easy to use and simple to install, Motorola's RSG Series products are designed for Seamless Mobility. Subscribers can enhance their home network and enjoy high-quality digital voice services over a broadband connection.

The Motorola RSG Series products are designed to provide a seamless gateway for voice calls. A voice call or data connection is seamlessly handed off between the RSG's wireless local access network (WLAN) access point and the cellular network as the user moves between them.

Seamless mobile communications is delivered when a user receives voice and data services on a dual-mode mobile handset with cellular and WLAN capability. Service within the WLAN is provided via Voice-over-IP (VoIP) over Wi-Fi, while service outside the WLAN is carried via cellular networks.

The RSG Series products can plug into any broadband connection. They offer a full-featured 802.11 b/g wireless access point and a four-port wired router for home network connectivity. The RSG Series products eliminate the need for standalone routers, hubs, and access points, providing a single platform for home networking.

The RSG Series includes the 802.11e admission control standard and supports high-quality voice calls even when users are surfing the web. The RSG Series products also support a variety of rich Custom Local Area Signaling Services (CLASS) features, such as caller ID, call waiting, three-way calling, and call forwarding.

The RSG Series products — when used with a compatible dual-mode handset — provide the ability to roam between a home's Wi-Fi network and the cellular network, seamlessly transferring the signal path to-or-from one network to the other without interrupting the call — in a secure and reliable fashion, without compromising usability features such as long battery life in the mobile handset.

SVG2500: A Fully Integrated Home Voice and Data Solution

Motorola's SVG2500 SURFboard® Digital Voice Wireless Gateway is designed for seamless mobility. It is a fully integrated telecommunications solution that combines the functionality of a cable modem; embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter (eMTA); four-port router with advanced firewall; 802.11b/g wireless access point; and an integrated Lithium-ion backup battery in a stylish Motorola design.

It offers seamless mobile communications, high-speed data, digital landline telephone service, and home networking — all in one convenient package. The SVG2500 is an advanced, integrated, and robust home gateway solution ideal for seamless mobility and PacketCable™ Multimedia (PCMM) architectures. It can support up to 16 Service Identifiers to allow for expansion of enhanced features offered in the future. It has an integrated Lithium-ion battery backup and uses industry-standard signaling protocols to deliver an all-in-one solution that provides:

  • High-speed Internet access through multiple Ethernet ports and a USB port.
  • Up to two lines of primary-line VoIP telephone service over cable's broadband connection to the home.
  • A wireless gateway.
  • Cellular and WLAN capability that enables the seamless provisioning of both landline and mobile voice calls.

A voice call or data connection is transparently handed off between the SVG2500's WLAN access point and the cellular network as the user moves between them. When used with a compatible dual-mode mobile handset, the SVG2500 provides the ability to roam from a home's Wi-Fi network to a cellular network while maintaining an active phone call.
