tru2way™ Platform Migration with Motorola

The tru2way specification grew out of the need of cable operators to deploy applications across multiple platforms with less expense and effort. The establishment of the tru2way specification is an achievement that enables developers of interactive television services and applications to design products that will run on a wide variety of cable television systems in North America, regardless of set-top, television receiver hardware, or operating system software.

Tru2way deployment involves several additions and modifications to equipment in the headend. Motorola offers an end-to-end solution for tru2way that extends from the headend to the home, and Motorola will provide the professional services to manage your headend transformation to tru2way.

Modifying the Headend for tru2way
At the heart of your headend resides the Motorola Digital Addressable Controller (DAC) 6000 server, which manages and authorizes service selection to subscribers. The first step in preparing your network for tru2way is to upgrade the
DAC 6000 to version 3.1.1 software, supporting XAIT (eXtended Application Information Table) and CVT (Code Version Table) control messaging, which informs tru2way host set-tops where to tune for application and firmware code download.

The next step involves the addition of an object carousel server to the headend to provide code downloads. Motorola supports the integration of several third-party object carousel servers. With the release of DAC software version 4.0 and the addition of the CASMR DTA 1.1.0 software module, Motorola will incorporate simplified code download management for tru2way.

The third step entails implementation of the DOCSIS® Set-top Gateway (DSG) path from the headend to the tru2way-certified device in the home. This involves the installation of an additional Remote Addressable DANIS/DLS (RADD) 6000 server. The RADD 6000 works in conjunction with the DAC 6000 and executes various real-time, repetitive message operations. The additional RADD 6000 is connected to the Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS). The DAC 6000 and additional RADD 6000 function as the DSG server sourcing Out-Of-Band (OOB) data. The DSG agent is the implementation of the DSG protocol within the CMTS. The DSG agent creates the DSG Tunnel, places data from the DSG server into the DSG tunnel, and transmits the DSG tunnel to the DSG client or tru2way-certified device. The final step is to upgrade the SmartStream Encryptor Modulators (SEMs) to version 7.1.2 software to support in-band signaling, a requirement of several object carousel servers.

DTA Platform Migration with Motorola
The Motorola DTA 100 Digital Transport Adapter is a low-cost digital to analog adapter that supports decoding of digital services for use with analog TVs. The product allows cable operators to remove analog services from their headend. Discontinuing analog service frees up cable bandwidth that can be used to deliver more valued digital services. DTA deployment involves several additions and modifications to equipment in the headend; to facilitate a fast, smooth, and hassle-free transition, Motorola will provide the professional services to manage your headend conversion to support DTA service.

Modifying the Headend for DTA
To support DTA service, the Motorola DAC 6000 server should be upgraded to version 3.1.1-17 software or version 4.0 with CASMR DTA 1.0.0. This software provides SCTE-65 System Information generation and CVT control messaging. It also supports the loading of DTA system and configuration information into the DAC from the billing system. Another requirement of DTA service is the addition of an object carousel server for in-band code download. The last step in supporting DTA is to upgrade the SEMs to version 7.1.2 software to support in-band signaling, a prerequisite for in-band code download.
